This past decade saw the revival of the remakes of better films from before, but many filmmakers made names of themselves in the past decade. Many of these directors had already been working in the 90's but they made their names in the past decade. So let's look at 5 who stood out to me.

1. Peter Jackson
Before 2001, Jackson was a director of splatter-house horror comedies like "Bad Taste" and "Braindead". That all changed when Jackson directed JRR Tolkien's "Lord of the RIngs" trilogy, garnering him Oscars for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture for "The Return of the King". He followed up with the 2005 remake of "King Kong". In 2009, he produced the critically acclaimed science-fiction film "District 9" which found it's way to the Oscars but won none, along with his forgotten film adaptation of "The Lovely Bones".
Future: Jackson is currently filming a film adaptation of Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and is producing Steven Spielberg's film adaptation "The Adventures of Tintin" and is in development hell for a film version of the Halo video games. geez, busy guy...

2. Christopher Nolan
While Nolan is widely recognized for his work for "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight"; I like to look at his other works that showed him as visually creative guy with ingenious storytelling. From "Momento" to "Insomnia" to "The Prestige" to his wildly acclaimed "Inception", Nolan truly has everything to be considered in a few decades or so to become an important filmmaker along the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese, that is once he's made a few more movies based off his own original ideas…
Future: Apart from washing his hands of Batman with the upcoming conclusion "The Dark Knight Rises", Nolan is co-writing the script for Zach Snyder's upcoming Superman movie.

3. Ang Lee
While he got his start in the 90's with the critically praised "Sense and Sensibility" it was the cinematically breath-taking "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" that got him into the mainstream, allowing him to direct the greatly underrated comic book movie "Hulk" and win Oscar gold for the controversial romance drama "Brokeback Mountain". His most recent film was the underrated and inaccurate film "Taking Woodstock".
Future: Lee currently is in production for a film adaptation of the novel "The Life of Pi", if anyone could do it, he sure can.

4. Quentin Tarantino
While his true claim to fame began in the 90's with "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction" (the latter winning him the Palme d'Or and an OScar) he became a household name with the over-the-top bloodbath known as "Kill Bill". He reunited with long-time friend Robert Rodriguez for the double feature movie "Grindhouse". He showed more of his chops in writing with writing Rodriguez's "Sin City" and producing Eli Roth's torture film "Hostel". Tarantino then topped off the decade with his gloriously raunchy "Inglorious Basterds" in 2009.
Future: Tarantino is currently in pre-production for his upcoming Spaghetti Western-esqe Pre-Civil War film "Django Unchained", starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Personally, this could be even more hilarious if Johnny Depp could pop up in one of his future films.

5. Steven Soderbergh
this past decade has been Soderbergh's playground. From winning an Oscar for "Traffic", ironically losing out to himself for the film he made the same year, "Erin Brockovich". But he got himself into the mainstream with the popular heist film, "Oceans 11" which was followed by it's sequels "Oceans 12 and 13". He followed with that with "The Good German" (which was filmed in the same style that Casablanca was filmed at the 33:1 aspect ratio instead of the 66:1 like most films these days) and the 2009 comedy "The Informant!". Hot damn this guy's been a busy bee!
Future: At Comic-Con 2011, he revealed his 2 of his newest upcoming films. On September 9th, his newest film "Contagion" will hit theaters and by January of next year, an action film entitled "Haywire" is set to be released. Personally, I'd love to see more dramas from him.

And there we are, those were just my personal choices of directors and the films they made. Thanks for reading and have a lovely day!
Just my opinions on some directors who've shown great chops and broke away from obscurity to become well-recognized in the past decade....sorta, barely anybody I've talked to remembers Steven Soderbergh's serious work.

Did you like Oceans 12 and 13? I heard those weren't too good.
