A few teenage lads taking inspiration from the music coming from America, specially Doo-Wop, Folksy blues and rock and roll, pooled together 17 shillings and three pence (if you want to calculate that into the current money, be my guest) to record this cover of a popular Buddy Holly song. This group was called The Quarrymen...

...but they changed their name in July 1960 to "The Beatles" as a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets after Buddy's unfortunate death the year before.
The next year, the four began to perform at The Cavern Club where they were picked up by future manager Brian Epstein, in came Ringo Starr, and "Please Please Me" was released in 1963.

The rest, they say, is history.
